Globe Telecom’s 4G rollout gains ground

Posted By: SarahG - 6:23 PM
Globe Telecom’s rollout of its fourth generation infrastructure through the combined technology of long term evolution (LTE) and high speed packet access plus (HSPA+) is fast gaining ground, as the telecommunications company activated more sites across the country.

Following aggressive rollout of LTE,  the cutting-edge technology is now available in key cities in Metro Manila that include Makati City, Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig, Manila, Muntinlupa, San Juan and Las Pinas.

LTE infrastructure has  also been established in Metro Cebu and Metro Davao as well as in select areas in the provinces of Bohol, Batangas, Negros Occidental, La Union, Rizal, Aklan Laguna, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Cavite, Cagayan, Pangasinan, Isabela, Ilocos, Quirino, Tarlac  and  in key tourist destination Boracay.

“Globe Telecom’s rollout of 4G infrastructure is well on its course in line with our commitment to provide the fastest speed on the world’s best mobile phones and gadgets.  Our LTE-HSPA+ infrastructure will definitely enhance our subscribers’ mobile experience,” said Robert Tan, Globe Chief Technical Adviser.

Globe Telecom, which was the first to pioneer the LTE data and data roaming services in the Philippines, expects to further enhance its LTE network expansion in the months ahead as LTE sites will be fired up in select areas in the country. Majority of the planned LTE sites for 2013 will be activated in the second half of the year.

On the other hand, about 78% of the company’s network is already running on HSPA+, providing faster mobile browsing experience for its customers, said Tan. In metropolitan Manila alone, about 96% of the company’s network currently utilizes HSPA+.

Tan emphasized the company’s approach to the LTE rollout has been to focus on “large contiguous areas” instead of “pocket activations” and “hotspots” to ensure greater and more stable coverage for customers.

Globe will also continue to upgrade its HSPA+ network capability by progressively activating more sites nationwide, said Tan, emphasizing that the company will have comprehensive HSPA+ coverage of close to 100% by the end of the year.

“More and more areas in the near future would be LTE-HSPA+ capable in line with our network and IT modernization program, moving closer to providing superior customer experience,” added Tan, referring to the company’s transformation initiatives amounting to around $790 million.

Users of both smartphones and tablet computers benefit greatly from a 4G infrastructure as it dramatically increases data transmission speed. Download speed reached up to 42 Mbps compared to a peak download speed of 3 Mbps for the 3G network.

To illustrate, a smartphone user can download a video, document, or song in mere seconds.

Globe Telecom’s LTE-HSPA+ rollout, in tandem with its network modernization project, bodes well with company projection of a surge in the use of smartphones over the next few years amid emergence of competitively-priced devices and increasing use of mobile internet.

Posted By: SarahG - 6:22 PM
Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom is set to hold the Globe Football Para sa Bayan Mini Festival on October 26 at the DLSU Zobel Globe Football Field in Ayala Alabang.  The event is a gathering of key movers in the football scene who want to assist disadvantaged youth and help in nation-building through sports.

“We want to capitalize on the sport of football as an intervention tool for children in underserved communities.  Sports is a way to develop the children’s well-being and may also open doors for them to a better life,” said Fernando Esguerra, Globe OIC for Corporate Social Responsibility.

The one day celebration will be front-lined by Azkals Team Captain and Globe Ambassador Chieffy Caligdong together with his teammates in Green Archers United, one of the most competitive teams in the United Football League.  Joining them are members of the women’s national football team, more commonly known as Malditas and teen varsity football players from La Salle Zobel and La Salle Greenhills.

The pool of committed coaches and football mentors will facilitate drills and scrimmages for six football communities catering to disadvantaged children, namely: Gawad Kalinga FC, Dream Big Pilipinas FA, Futkal FC, Payatas FC, Muntinlupa United FC, and Pinay FC.

Globe Football Para Sa Bayan Mini Fest is a soft launch and preview to the year-round football campaign of the company in 2014 which will be composed of all partners working together to bring the program around the country to impact nation-building in a big way.

Football is just the first step in Globe sports advocacy as the company continues to develop various sports programs for its CSR communities.

Earlier, Globe officially unveiled its sports advocacy program, Globe Sports, by announcing its full support for Malditas and Muzang, the Philippine national futsal team.

Prior to the official launching of its sports advocacy, Globe also sponsored GAU FC in the United Football League, DLSU Greenhills Football Team, and a number of futsal tournaments.

By backing the Malditas and Muzang together with GAUC FC and DLSU Football Team, Globe becomes the biggest stakeholder of football in the Philippines.  The said football teams will also carry the “Globe Football Para sa Bayan” as their CSR football advocacy.

Globe Labs partners with Google Developers Group on nationwide DevFests

Posted By: SarahG - 6:19 PM
Globe Labs, the dynamic and innovative developer community of Globe Telecom, has partnered with the Google Developers Group (GDG) in the Philippines on the holding of a nationwide DevFest consisting of eight community-organized events anticipating at least 1,000 developers and students interested to learn about Google technologies and products.

“This year’s DevFest is special because it is the first time that GDG is holding eight of them all over the country.  And being a strong supporter of shared community approach through open source technology, we believe that we can help developers hone their IT skills by participating in the GDG DevFests,” said Anne Michelle Santos, Developer Relations Manager of Globe Labs.

Globe Telecom, through Globe Labs, has been working with GDG on various initiatives. Early this year, Globe Labs and GDG Philippines organized the DevFest Women (DevFestW) Philippines for women in technology. In 2012, Globe also brought the DevFests to Cebu and Bacolod.

This time, after the Manila leg kicked off in September, it was followed immediately by Cagayan de Oro which is the first in Mindanao, and then Bacolod.  GDG is also set to hold the DevFests in Cebu, Zamboanga and Davao in October, and in Baguio and Cordillera in the following months.

GDG DevFest is a community-led event that has technical and non-technical sessions centered around Google developer technologies and platforms.  It is geared towards web and mobile developers who want to build applications using Google technologies, members of the academe who need to learn how to use Google Apps for online collaboration and global classrooms, and business owners and content publishers who want to boost website traffic and have effective online marketing.

For the eight DevFests, GDG Philippines have invited local experts on Google technologies, as well as Googlers to talk and interact with the developers attending the event.  Topics range from the importance of innovation especially for emerging markets, building a culture of technopreneurship in the Philippines, developing mobile apps for the global market using Google technologies such as YouTube API, Google App Engine, Google Drive Realtime API, Google Maps API, and Google+ API, among others.

Globe Arakan XC2 Brings Bikers Together to Save the Philippine Eagle

Posted By: SarahG - 12:56 AM
The sun had barely emerged over the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Davao City when the participants of Globe Arakan XC2 started trickling in with their bikes in tow. Many were from Davao City, but many others had come from Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, and even Manila in anticipation of the ultimate bike challenge of the season.

Globe Arakan XC2 wasn’t any ordinary bike challenge. As a fundraiser to save the home of the Philippine Eagle, the challenge sought to support the Philippine Eagle Foundation’s Forest Corridor Development Initiative (FCDI). The FCDI aims to provide educational and livelihood support, as well as Paralegal and Raptor Management Training to the communities that act as stewards of the forest in the Arakan Valley in North Cotabato.

Globe employee Ronald Rivera had caught a bus from General Santos the night before, arriving shortly before midnight just to make it to the event. He was hoping for a challenging ride and wasn’t disappointed. “I really looked forward to this because I heard a lot about this last year. Hindi ko inexpect na ganun kahirap yung (I wasn’t expecting the trail to be that hard) trail but it was very enjoyable.”

A total of 75 bikers stepped up to the challenge of taking on the 60-kilometer loop from the Philippine Eagle Center to Salaysay and back. The trail was a mix of road of and rugged terrain, with many parts involving a steep uphill climb.

Composed of both seasoned athletes and recreational bikers, participants ranged from teenagers to those in their mid-fifties. Many had come with their friends, others came alone. Despite their different backgrounds and experience levels, they all came together as one to show their support for the cause.

Salome Zamora, one of the two female bikers, had come all the way from Sultan Kudarat. She says, “I heard it would help indigenous communities in Arakan so I joined.”

One of the oldest participants, 55-year-old retired colonel Rodrigo Turno says, “I wanted to give support to the Philippine Eagle Foundation para makatulong ako kahit paano (to help somehow). Ito yung isa sa pinakasikat na kayamanan natin (It’s one of our most important treasures)the Philippine Eagle of Davao.” He also adds, “Sa pagsali, tulong na rin, naka exercise pa.” (By joining, I’m able to help and exercise at the same time.)

Although Globe Arakan XC2 wasn’t a race, Globe recognized the top finishers. The top 10 guest bikers were presented with limited edition jerseys, the fourth to seventh registered finishers were given Huawei phones, and the top three registered finishers were awarded Huawei tablets.

Triathlete Jean Patrick Serreno was the first to cross the finish line at 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 52 seconds. The 29-year-old admitted to having difficulty at some parts, but says, “Hindi talaga nag-cross sa isip ko na mag-stop. Inisip ko lang continue, continue hanggang sa dulo.” (I didn’t consider stopping. I just kept thinking I should continue until the end.) For Jean, the adventure doesn’t end here. He says, “Aabangan namin ‘yung sunod!” (We’ll wait for the next!)

Globe Telecom to offer Free Facebook access for its 36 million subscribers

Posted By: SarahG - 6:29 AM
Collaboration with Facebook to bring together first-of-its-kind customer experience innovations such as availability in all Facebook mobile platforms, advice of charge notifications, one-click to purchase data plans & data access lending to access links outside Facebook

Setting another unprecedented milestone in Philippine telecommunications, Globe Telecom is giving the telco’s over 36 million subscribers free access to Facebook on mobile phones for an initial period of three (3) months. Globe worked closely with Facebook to enable customer experience innovations for the best free Facebook offer yet.

Available to all Globe Prepaid, Postpaid, and TM subscribers using feature phones and smartphones* and accessing either through the mobile site of Facebook or the Facebook app, users can post, like, comment, chat, add friends, upload photos, share posts, and more on Facebook without the need for Wi-Fi.

Aside from offering Facebook at zero data charges, the collaboration between the two global companies has also paved the way for subscribers to enjoy first-of-its-kind customer experience innovations.

Working with Silicon Valley-based Facebook engineers, Globe has put together innovations that cover key milestones in the customer experience journey such as availability of access on feature phones and smartphones across all Facebook mobile platforms whether via the Facebook app or Facebook’s mobile site m.facebook.com; no billshock or “nakaw load” as customers will be notified if they will incur data charges once a link that leads out of Facebook is clicked; and one-click registration to the data plan of choice to continue browsing without having to leave the site. Recommended data plans consider a subscriber’s available prepaid balance and/or megabytes (MB) balance of existing data plan.

Moreover, customers with not enough prepaid load can “loan” a 10MB data plan for only P10 which will be deducted on their succeeding top-up so they can fully explore content outside Facebook, making the experience seamless and worry-free.

“Once again, Globe has proven that it is the mobile data service provider of choice by industry and technology leaders around the world with this breakthrough partnership with Facebook to give our 36 million subscribers uninterrupted, seamless, and worry-free Free Facebook experience. This is collaboration at its peak, which has resulted in the best and most innovative Free Facebook experience yet,” said Peter Bithos, Senior Advisor for Consumer Business at Globe Telecom. “

Globe is progressively rolling-out availability of the Free Facebook service to cover all its subscribers by October 31, 2013.

Bithos added, “Over the past months, the engineering, business development and marketing teams at both Globe and Facebook have worked together to plan and design the customer experience from scratch – which includes making the service available across all Facebook mobile platforms, rolling out a system that alerts users once they are about to click a link that will incur them data charges, paving the way for subscribers to easily subscribe to a data plan without having to leave Facebook, and allowing data access lending for subscribers who don’t have enough prepaid load to continue browsing links outside Facebook. This service testifies how Globe is transforming itself beyond just an access carrier. Globe is striving to be a leading digital brand catering to the needs of digital Filipinos who need to be connected to their social circles around the world.”

"Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected," said Chris Daniels, vice president of partnerships at Facebook. “Globe understands the opportunities giving people access to the Internet brings and we’re thrilled to be working with them to give Globe subscribers access to Facebook without data charges across our apps and mobile website.”

Starting October 31, 2013, subscribers can dial *143# and select FREE FB to know more about Globe Free Facebook.

Tattoo first to bring LTE technology to households

Posted By: SarahG - 6:25 AM
New offering expands Globe LTE footprint covering close to 1,000 sites nationwide

Globe Telecom expands its Long Term Evolution (LTE) footprint as Tattoo Home Broadband, its home broadband brand, brings the latest internet technology to households, allowing subscribers to surf the internet at ultrafast speeds within the comfort of their homes, effectively bringing the telco’s LTE coverage of close to 1,000 sites nationwide, matching the LTE coverage of competition.

With home broadband LTE, households will now have access to high-speed internet ideal for watching high-definition videos, downloading and uploading large files, seamless video and music streaming, and voice-over-internet-protocol or VOIP calling with clear quality. This LTE service is backed by the largest 4G network in the country deployed by Globe.

Head of Tattoo Home Broadband Jurist Gamban said that, “Tattoo Home Broadband once again leads the industry as the first to offer the most advanced wireless broadband technology that is LTE for the home broadband market. With this latest offering, we are able to reach more households around the country who initially did not have access to high-speed broadband. Now with the power of our largest 4G network, we can bring great value broadband services powered by the latest technologies to more people.”

Using the fastest broadband technologies, Filipino families now have access to blazing internet speeds that are easy on the pocket. Unlimited broadband bundles with free calls to Globe and TM may be availed of starting at Plan 1099 at 1 Mbps, Plan 1299 at 2 Mbps, Plan 1599 at 3 Mbps, Plan 2299 at 5 Mbps, Plan 3999 at 10 Mbps and Plan 4999 at 15 Mbps. Meanwhile, internet-only plans that connect at 3 and 5 Mbps are available at Plan 999 and 1999 respectively, both with unlimited web access.

This development comes at the heels of Tattoo’s enhanced Home Broadband bundles early this year. All bundles come with high-speed internet, free landline, and free unlimited landline to mobile (Globe and TM) calls. Touted as the “biggest deal in home broadband,” the unlimited calls feature is also available on the Tattoo Home Broadband LTE Plans.

Tattoo Home Broadband powered by Globe 4G LTE is available in key areas in Metro Manila and select cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. For more information, log on to tattoo.globe.com.ph, call (02) 730-1010, visit the nearest Globe store or get in touch with authorized Globe Sales Agents.
